Mura Section 1

Bassano Dam

  • headworks of the EID's canal system
  • located southwest of the Town of Bassano on the Bow River
  • built by the CPR between 1910 – 1914
  • refurbished by the EID between 1985 – 1987
Mura Section 2

Brooks Aqueduct

  • built by the CPR between 1912 – 1915
  • 3 km long, 18 m high
  • replaced by the EID with an earthen canal in 1979
  • named a National Historic Site in 1987
Mura Section 3

Grazing

  • 600,000 acres of grazing lands are owned by the EID, the majority of which are native prairie
  • sustains approximately 40,000 head for the summer months
Mura Section 4

Original Irrigation System

  • built by the CPR in the early 1900's
  • rehabilitated and expanded over the last 75 years by the EID
  • now consists of 1,000 km canals, 1,000 km pipelines, and 2,000 km drains
Mura Section 5

Early Farming

  • very labour intensive
  • considerably smaller farms
  • only 100,000 acres were irrigated in 1935
Mura Section 6

Flood Irrigation

  • only method of irrigation in the early years of the District
  • very labour intensive and not as efficient as sprinkler
  • some remains, but is progressively being converted to sprinkler
Mura Section 7

Future of the EID

  • striving to continue to be a leader in water management
  • continuing to rehabilitate infrastructure with pipelines, automated structures and lined canals
  • maintaining a drought management plan to ensure sustainable water for all needs
  • continuing to convey water for irrigation, as well as for municipalities and other industry
Mura Section 8

Pivot Irrigation

  • replaced flood and wheel move irrigation as the most efficient method today
  • 300,000 acres are irrigated today with the same amount of water that it took to irrigate 100,000 acres in 1935
  • District offers grants and incentives for conversion to more efficient methods of irrigation
Mura Section 9

Oil and Gas Activity

  • extensive throughout District lands
  • lands are managed to enable oil and gas activity, grazing and wildlife to co-exist
  • minimal disturbance is promoted by the District as a means of conscientious land stewardship due to the fragile ecology of the native prairie
Mura Section 10

Present Day Farming

  • modern farming methods have increased the size of the family farm
  • by land base, irrigated agriculture is 4% of the agriculture in Alberta and produces 20% of the agricultural product
  • many specialty crops are grown in the District due to the high heat units and precise application of irrigation water
Mura Section 11

Habitat and Wildlife

  • the EID's Partners in Habitat Development program has planted over 400,000 trees and shrubs
  • many species of birds and animals would not be common to this area without the habitat created by the irrigation system
  • in conjunction with Ducks Unlimited, the EID annually delivers water to 35,000 acres of wetland projects
Mura Section 12

Recreation

  • 13 storage reservoirs enable the multi-use of irrigation water for numerous activities
  • Lake Newell Reservoir is the District's largest reservoir and provides tremendous recreational opportunities
  • EID constructed the Rolling Hills Reservoir Campground in 2004
  • EID redeveloped the Crawling Valley Campground in 2009
